How long should I exercise for?

Updated: Oct 17

In the ‘olden days’ a workout wasn’t worth its salt if it didn’t last at least an hour. But this wasn’t sustainable, people gave up more quickly as they simply didn’t have the time they thought was required to get or stay fit.

Thank goodness all that has changed and we now understand that ‘quality not quantity’ works with exercise (and with chocolate – mostly!). Working out for shorter periods of time can actually be more beneficial than long, drawn-out bouts of exercise.

If packed with purpose and targeted moves, a 45, 30 or even 15 minute workout will make you feel amazing and leave you plenty of time to get on with your day. These are just some of the benefits of shorter bursts of exercise:

1. You can exercise at a higher intensity

2. You don’t get bored or feel you’re ‘going through the motions’

3. You feel more focussed and motivated

4. You use more muscles at the same time

At Gemma Pearce Fitness, we understand that you don’t have much time to devote to exercise, the demands on your time are endless and exercising can easily fall to the bottom of the list, or off the list completely.

At our online classes, we like to use HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) in some of our workouts as it’s a really effective way to pack a lot of exercise into a shorter time. The idea is to push hard in the intervals and rest between to get your breath back – it’s tough but effective. After a 20 or 30 minute HIIT workout, you will feel that you’ve achieved a lot feel great!

The optimal length and type of workout is whatever works best for you! It’s about when you can fit exercise into your busy day, when your motivation is at its best – some people prefer to exercise first thing in the morning when they have the most energy and they can get it done and out of the way, others have more time in the evenings, and it becomes a social event with others.

Little and often could be the key to getting you back on track with your fitness. Including a walk or some gardening in your day, a swim on another day, an online hand weights session the next day and a Pilates class to reset and feel good.

Gemma Pearce Fitness has a wide range of online and face-to-face classes around Abingdon and Didcot, Oxfordshire to inspire you to get moving and, for just a fraction of your day, make exercise an integral part of your lifestyle. Visit www.gemmapearcefitness.co.uk to find out more.
