Cumbia is one of the most recognisable and feel-good Latin rhythms you’ll come across in Zumba and Zumba Gold. It has a warm, tropical sound that instantly lifts the room — and the steps are simple enough for complete beginners to follow with confidence.

A Little History

Cumbia began in Colombia several centuries ago. It started as a courtship dance created by African, Indigenous and Spanish communities, blending drums, flutes and a steady walking-style rhythm. Over time it spread across Latin America, and today you’ll find modern Cumbia music everywhere from festivals to family parties. The basic side-tap or “one-two” movement you do in class comes straight from the traditional steps.

A Few Facts

  • Cumbia is now danced across countries like Mexico, Peru, Argentina and Chile — each with its own style.

  • The classic “drag step” in Cumbia comes from when dancers used to wear long skirts and had to keep their feet close to the floor.

  • Cumbia’s rhythm is steady and predictable, which is why it works so well in beginner-friendly dance fitness.

Why It’s Great

Cumbia uses gentle, grounded steps with easy hip movement. There’s no jumping or sharp turns, which makes it ideal for improving mobility safely. The slower tempo compared to salsa gives you plenty of time to find the beat and enjoy the flow.

You’ll benefit from:

  • Looser hips and better mobility

  • Stronger core and leg muscles

  • Improved rhythm and coordination

  • A natural boost in mood and confidence

In Zumba Gold, I simplify the steps even further so you can relax into the music without worrying about what your feet are doing. It’s one of those rhythms where you can switch off your brain, enjoy the energy and feel great from the very first song.
