If you’ve ever been to a Zumba Gold class, you’ll know that Merengue is where we begin. It’s one of the simplest and most joyful rhythms in Zumba — all about marching to the beat, swinging your hips and letting the music do the work.

We usually do Merengue right at the start of the class, just after the warm-up. It’s the perfect rhythm to get you moving, loosen up your joints and lift your energy levels for the rest of the session. The steady, repetitive beat makes it easy to follow, so everyone can relax, find the rhythm and enjoy moving together.

Where It Comes From

Merengue is the national dance of the Dominican Republic and has roots stretching back to the 19th century. It’s said to have evolved from a mix of African and European influences — African rhythms brought by enslaved people blending with European partner dances. Traditionally, it’s a lively, social dance performed in pairs, with small, quick steps and strong hip action. Over time, Merengue spread across the Caribbean and Latin America, becoming a staple of Latin dance culture and eventually a favourite rhythm in Zumba.

Why It’s Great

Merengue uses small, repetitive steps that keep you moving without strain. The hips and waist do most of the work, giving you a fantastic core and leg workout without any jumping or twisting. The beat naturally encourages movement through the spine and torso, helping you feel supple and strong at the same time.

It’s brilliant for:

• Loosening stiff hips and backs

• Warming up the whole body safely

• Building rhythm and coordination

• Boosting your mood instantly

In Zumba Gold, we slow it down slightly, add easy arm patterns, and focus on posture and movement flow. It’s the perfect way to build confidence on the dance floor — no partner needed! You’ll find yourself smiling without even realising it, and by the end of the song, you’ll already feel energised and ready for the rest of the class.
