Bunions, Foot Dysfunction and Pilates: Strengthening Your Foundation

Your feet are your foundation. Every step, every squat and every balance exercise starts there. If the foot is weak, stiff or structurally altered, the effects travel upwards to the knees, hips and spine.

A bunion (hallux valgus) is a bony change at the base of the big toe. The toe gradually angles inwards, altering how weight passes through the foot. This is not just cosmetic. It changes balance, push-off strength and joint loading.

When the big toe cannot extend properly or accept load:

  • Push-off becomes weaker

  • Weight shifts into the inside of the foot

  • Knees may collapse inwards

  • Glutes become underactive

  • Balance reduces

Many people with knee or hip pain do not realise their foot mechanics are contributing.

Pilates links foot control to hip and core stability.

We work on:

  • Tripod foot awareness (big toe, little toe, heel)

  • Toe spreading and short foot activation

  • Gentle big toe mobility

  • Ankle control and alignment

  • Balance training

  • Glute strengthening

We do not force the big toe into painful positions or ignore the issue.

If you have bunions, you are not limited. You need progressive strength and awareness.
